New York to Lizard cape record
This is a mythical record for several reasons in the offshore racing community but also for the general public. It crosses the northern Atlantic ocean from west to east starting from New York and ending at Lizard cape. This record have seen many famous seamen trying to beat it. It is a myth because it has been held by Charlie Barr and his schooner for 75 years (!). In 1980, Eric Tabarly broke this record by 2 days with his trimaran Paul Ricard.
The Atlantic record will then become an obsession and will be beaten by Marc Pajot, Patrick Morvan, Loïc Carradec, Phillipe Poupon and Serge Madec in 1990. Madec's record of 6d 13hrs will last for 11 years and will only be beaten by Steve Fossett aboard the maxicat Playstation in 2001 thanks to a good weather. It took Fossett only 4d 17hrs and 28mins to cross the Atlantic ocean!
